Prof. Giovanni Teodori
MD

Born in Florence, Italy on January 16, 1954, Dr. Teodori is now one of Italy’s leading cardiac surgeons specialising in CABG, mitral valve reconstruction, left ventricle aneurysms, surgery of the thoracic aorta and surgical treatment of ventricular failure. He is a pioneer in off-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, in CABG via mini-thoracotomy and in the use of arterial conduits for CABG. With well over 15 years experience, the number of adult cardiac surgeries Dr. Teodori has performed has crossed 5,000 and at October 31 last year, stood at the impressive figure of 5,178 surgeries.

Dr. Teodori graduated ‘cum laude’ from the University of Florence’s Medical School in 1981. From 1984 to 1990, he worked under Prof. Daniel Guilmet (Université Paris Ouest) as the cardio-thoracic surgeon on staff at the Centre Medico-Chirurgical Foch. From there, he moved to the Centre of Cardiac Surgery ‘Clinica Villa Maria Beatrice’ in Florence where he was surgeon on staff until 1993.

From 1993 to 2002, Dr. Teodori was Chief of Service at the Divisione Della Clinica Cardiochirurgica dell’Università ‘G. d’Anninzio’ of Chieti, Italy under the chairmanship of Prof. A. M. Calafiore. There together with Prof. Calafiore, Dr. Teodori conducted research studies that led to the development of haematic warm cardioplegia, off-pump CABG, the use of arterial conduits for CABG as well as CABG via mini-thoracotomy.

Between 2002 and 2003, Dr. Teodori was the Chief of Service at the Department of Cardiac Surgery of Specialist Hospital ‘S. Andrea’ in Rome and from 2003 to 2004, held the same position at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, University Hospital ‘S.Giovanni-Molinette’ in Turin. In May 2004, he accepted the position of Chairman of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital ‘Maggiore della Carità’ in Novara, Italy – a chairmanship which he held until October 2008.

Between 1991 and 2008, Dr. Teodori also lectured as a professor at the Universities of Florence, Chieti, Turin and East Piedmont in Italy.

In November 2008, he accepted the position of Head Cardiac Surgeon at Caribbean Heart Care Medcorp Limited in Trinidad and Tobago and has performed complex cardiac surgeries at both the Eric Williams Medical Science Complex in Mount Hope as well as at St. Clair Medical Centre in St. Clair.

A member of several international medical societies, Dr. Teodori also participates on the editorial boards and is a reviewer for noted medical journals like ‘Annals of Thoracic Surgery’. His work, particularly in CABG surgery, has led to more than 60 peer-reviewed publications as well as over 100 abstracts and papers, presentations at scientific meetings and chapters in medical texts.

Dr. Teodori’s wife, Mauricette Samoun, is a cardiologist. Together, they have three children.
