
Dr. Torres qualified as a medical surgeon in 1977 from the “Lisandro Alvarado” School of Medicine-Occidental Centre in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Over the next three years, he interned at the “Antonio Maria Pineda” Central Hospital, trained at the “El Tocuyo“ Health Centre and completed his residency at the Egidio Montesinos Health Centre-“El Tocuyo”.
From 1982 to 1984, Dr. Torres pursued postgraduate qualifications in cardiology at Luis Gómez López Hospital attached to ASCARDIO Regional Cardiovascular Centre in Barquisimeto. He left Venezuela for Brazil in 1984 to specialise in cardiovascular catheterization at the Institute of Heart-Clinics Hospital at the University of Sao Paulo following which he returned to Venezuela in 1986 to take up a post at the Cardiovascular Catheterization Lab at ASCARDIO Regional Cardiovascular Centre, where he was also lectured postgraduate students in cardiology, later becoming Chief of Service for cardiovascular catheterization in 1995. Between 1986 and 1989 he was also Medical Coordinator of ASCARDIO’s Clinical Unit.
Indeed, for almost a decade, CHCm has been forging strong ties with leading cardiac specialists from neighbouring Venezuela. In 1998, Dr. William Torres of ASCARDIO – Venezuela’s renowned cardiovascular training and treatment centre – came to Trinidad to perform this country’s first thoracic aortic implant surgery. Subsequent to this groundbreaking procedure, which was performed at St. Clair Medial Centre, Dr. Torres returned on a regular basis to lend his extensive expertise to our team and is now CHCm’s Head Interventionist. He leads the team of eight specialists (4 Interventional Cardiologists and 4 Clinical Cardiologists) in our 365/7/24 service at CHCm.
In 1989, Dr Torres was appointed Co-ordinator of the Centroccidental Committee for CPR Programmes headquartered at ASCARDIO and in 1996, became the Venezuelan Society of Cardiology’s representative for CPR Programmes-Centroccidental.
He has also held the posts of Scientific Multicentral Co-ordinator of Studies in Streptokinase (EMEV) and of ASCARDIO’s Co-ordinator of Postgraduate Cardiovascular Catheterization.
In 1994, Dr. Torres was appointed Co-director of EMERAS and has worked with Procto Amplatzer, Numed and Medtronic. His currently specialises in Catheterization Lab procedures, clinical cardiology and heath care management.
